Labour force participation rate example
The labor force participation rate refers to the number of people available for work as a percentage of the total population. In February 2020, it was 63.4%. It measures the amount of labor in an economy, one of the factors of production. The labour force participation rate formula as stated earlier can be defined as the % of the working-age population which is the share of the labor force. This is a measurement as to in what ratio and proportion of a population of the nation are either actively looking for employment or employed. To be in the labor force these individuals would either be currently employed or looking to be employed. To find the participation rate of this situation, the analyst would use this formula: 21 / 50 = .42 x 100 = 42%. Therefore, he would explain that according to his example 42% is the labor force. The labor force participation rate explains how the unemployment rate can grow, even when new jobs are being created in an economy. For example, if new workers are added to the labor force (increasing the participate rate), but are not able to find jobs, the unemployment rate grows. A labor force participation rate of 78.5% means that 78.5% of your eligible working age population is actually working or looking for work. Of course, it also means that 21.5% of your eligible working age population is not participating in economic activities.
